Nelnet Servicing, LLC Data Breach Exposes Individuals’ Personal Information

In July 2022, Nelnet Servicing, LLC (“Nelnet”), a student loan servicing company, became aware of a likely data breach involving its network. Based on a forensic investigation, Nelnet confirmed that cybercriminals had infiltrated its systems and gained unauthorized access to files containing the personal and confidential information of 2,501,324 individuals.

Did You Receive a Data Breach Letter From Nelnet?

According to Nelnet, the personal information exposed to cybercriminals in the data breach includes:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses

As a result of the data breach, these individuals’ personal and highly sensitive information may be in the hands of cybercriminals who can place the information for sale on the dark web or use the information to perpetrate identity fraud.
