On or about January 25, 2024, Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (“Group Health Cooperative” or “GHC-SCW”) detected suspicious activity on its computer network, indicating a data breach. Subsequently, Group Health Cooperative conducted a forensic investigation. Through this investigation, Group Health Cooperative determined that cybercriminals had successfully infiltrated Group Health Cooperative’s inadequately secured computer network and, thereby, stole data from GHC-SCW’s systems. The investigation further confirmed that the data obtained by cybercriminals includes the sensitive patient data of at least 533,809 individuals.
The sensitive information exposed in the data breach includes:
- Names
- Social Security numbers
- Addresses
- Dates of birth
- Driver’s license numbers
- Contact information
- Protected health information
- Health insurance information
As a result of the data breach, these individuals’ personal and highly confidential information may be in the hands of cybercriminals who can place the information for sale on the dark web or use the information to perpetrate identity fraud.
