Afni, Inc. Data Breach Exposes Personal Information of 261,449 Customers

Afni, Inc. (“Afni”) is a debt collection agency. On June 7, 2021, Afni detected suspicious activity on its computer network. Following a forensic investigation, Afni determined that on or before June 7, 2021 cybercriminals had gained unauthorized access to its systems, including files containing confidential customer information. Based on the investigation, Afni confirmed that cybercriminals potentially accessed and acquired personal information of 261,449 customers.

According to Afni, the personal information compromised in the data breach includes:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Dates of birth
  • Addresses

As a result of the Afni data breach, these individuals’ personal and highly sensitive information may be in the hands of cybercriminals who can place the information for sale on the dark web or use the information to perpetrate identity fraud.
